The Aboriginal Renewable Energy Fund (AREF) is available to provide some funding for eligible First Nation and Métis groups in the development of renewable energy generation projects.

AREF will assist qualifying Aboriginal groups in paying for a portion of soft costs, such as environmental studies, resource assessments, business plans and engineering designs associated with developing their eligible renewable energy projects.

The Ontario Financing Authority has introduced the Aboriginal Loan Guarantee Program through which up to 75 percent of the equity needed by a First Nation or Métis community for a project can be guaranteed if the funds for equity need to be borrowed from a bank or other financial institution.
