The number of companies, agencies and regulators in Ontario’s electricity sector can be intimidating. However, they all have clearly defined roles.
Regulation of Ontario's Electricity Market
The Ministry of Energy has overall responsibility for setting policy direction and for regulating Ontario's energy market. The Ontario Energy Board is responsible for regulating Ontario's natural gas and electricity sectors.
System Operation, Planning and Procurement
The Independent Electricity System Operator is responsible for ensuring a reliable, sustainable supply of electricity for Ontario and managing the reliable operations of Ontario's electricity system.
Generation, Transmission and Distribution
Generators produce electricity in a variety of ways. Transmitters move power across long distances to where it is needed and distributors deliver electricity to homes and businesses.
Retailers and Consumers
There are a number of retailers in Ontario that deliver electricity to consumers, including First Nations and Métis.
