Generators produce electricity in a variety of ways. Transmitters move power across long distances to where it is needed and distributors deliver electricity to homes and businesses.
For example, Ontario Power Generation and Bruce Power together account for almost 90 percent of Ontario's generation capacity. The remaining 10 percent of the generation capacity is owned by a large number and variety of smaller producers. For example, one producer is Umbata Falls LP, majority-owned by the Ojibway of the Pic River First Nation. This company operates the Umbata Falls hydro project.
An essential step in delivering energy to the people of Ontario is transmitting power through an energy network system. This is called the transmission system. Energy is moved between large power facilities, where energy is generated, to smaller substations in populated areas.
From these smaller substation facilities, local distribution companies are responsible for distributing energy into our homes and businesses.
