We at the Ontario Power Authority believe it’s an exciting time for your community to generate energy from clean sources of renewable power and put new "green" dollars into your community.

Ontario has launched an Aboriginal Energy Partnerships Program to maximize participation in renewable energy projects. This initiative will build capacity and participation by providing funds for community energy plans, funds for feasibility studies, technical research and developing business cases and creates an Aboriginal Renewable Energy Network. The OPA engaged in an enhanced process of communication with First Nations and Métis communities throughout 2009.  These sessions fostered ongoing dialogue between the OPA and Aboriginal communities, which provided useful input for the development of the Aboriginal Energy Partnerships Program.

On April 8, 2010 the first large-scale Feed-In Tariff contracts were announced and 16 Aboriginal projects were awarded contracts.

Under Ontario’s $250 million Aboriginal Loan Guarantee Program, Aboriginal communities will be eligible for loan guarantees that will allow them to take on equity participation in renewable generation and transmission projects.

This Aboriginal Renewable Energy Network has been created with input from your communities to help you participate in renewable energy development and reduce your energy costs. Renewable energy development can also provide opportunities to help build your community and increase its self-sufficiency.

Here you’ll find what you need to know about:

  1. Developing a renewable energy project
  2. Developing an Aboriginal community energy plan
  3. The four key types of renewable energy in Ontario
  4. The basics of financing a renewable energy project
  5. The daily operations of a renewable energy project
  6. How to apply to the Aboriginal Renewable Energy Fund

This information will help you complete your application to the OPA's Feed-in Tariff (FIT) Program for renewable energy and submit it for approval.

This is your network. The network is a key part of the Aboriginal Energy Partnerships Program. We hope that the website will evolve and grow according to your needs. Please let us know how we can make it better to give you the tools and information that you need to succeed. This comprehensive program is designed to assist Aboriginal communities in participating in developing renewable energy generation facilities.
